How to Apply
If you consider undertaking postgraduate study with us you should first consult the Head of School, Postgraduate Coordinator or individual academics regarding:
- the proposed thesis topic, or area of research
- the availability of supervision;
- facilities for the proposed research project;
- any scholarships available.
You may like to consult the Research Areas page for details of our current research activities before contacting the School. It is useful to know what research area you would like to work in, but you do not have to choose a project straight away. A degree of flexibility on both sides (the School and you) is helpful. Students frequently come to the School and work in a different area to their original preference.
Once it is confirmed that the School of Civil and Resource Engineering can provide the necessary supervision, facilities and resources for you to undertake supervised research in your chosen discipline you can proceed to apply for admission to your chosen postgraduate programme within the School.
You may apply at any time of the year as the programme is not run on a term or semester basis. However, it is important to note that most postgraduate scholarships do have deadlines and separate application procedures. If you want to be considered for these scholarships you must lodge your complete application before the deadlines. See the Scholarships page for detailed information.
Please also note that the procedures for international students are different from Australian residents (i.e. Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents).
- Complete the UWA Postgraduate Application Form. You need to supply the name of a School contact (i.e. Head of School or Postgraduate Coordinator) who has indicated the School’s willingness to supervise your proposed research project. A brief outline of the research work you wish to undertake (1-2 pages in length) is also required.
- Send three copies of completed Application form together with all the required supporting documents (1 original with certificated copies of supporting documents and 2 photocopied sets) to:
Manager, International Postgraduate Students International Centre The University of Western Australia 35 Stirling Highway, Perth Western Australia, 6009 AUSTRALIA
The UWA Postgraduate Application Form and further information on application procedures, enrolment matters and visa requirements can be found at the UWA International Centre –Postgraduate Studies website.

You need to supply the name of a School contact (i.e. Head of School or Postgraduate Coordinator) who has indicated the School’s willingness to supervise your proposed research project. A brief outline of the research work you wish to undertake (1-2 pages in length) is also required.
