Scholarships for Australian Residents
A number of postgraduate scholarships and supplementary awards valued over AUS $25,000 per annum (tax free) are offered to postgraduate students entering the School. Click the links below for detailed information about these scholarships and awards.
In addition, the School offers some “top-up” scholarships of $7,000 per annum to supplement the primary awards such as the Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA). These are funded by the Special Research Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS) or individual academic members’ research funding. For further information contact Mrs. Monica Macman, School Administrative Officer, on 61-8-9380 3094 or email her on monica@civil.uwa.edu.au.
Scholarships for International Students
A limited number of Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) and the Scholarships for International Research Fees (SIRF) at the University of Western Australia is available to outstanding international applicants. These prestigious scholarships actually only pay the PhD tuition fee, but anyone who gets an IPRS is also given a UWA scholarship to cover living expenses. The closing date for applications will be at the end of August each year (for scholarships commencing in the following year).
Details of the scholarships and the application procedures can be found at the following address:
http://www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/home/postgrad/international
The deadline for applications for 2007 scholarships is 31 August 2006. Application for scholarships for 2007 is by online application form only. All prospective students please go to https://grsserv03.grs.uwa.edu.au/iathena2006/default.aspx, to register on "iAthena". Applicants will be notified of the outcome by November and successful applicants are expected to take up their awards in the FIRST semester of the following year (ie: no later than 31st March). However, in exceptional circumstances commencement may be delayed until 30th June.
We do NOT have any financial support for international students who do not obtain an IPRS.
The IPRS scholarships are highly competitive, and to be honest, only applicants with exceptional academic records have a chance of obtaining one. In order to be competitive for an IPRS, you would need to be ranked in the top few percent of your class (eg top 2 out of 50). In the past, applicants with only a Bachelor degree or equivalent have not fared that well compared to those with a good Masters degree with also some publications to their name.
To be considered for the IPRS, you will need to:
- Indicate this in Section F – Financial Support on the UWA Postgraduate Application Form
- Submit your application by the end of August in any year (for scholarships commencing in the following year).
- Provide written references from two academic referees. These may be sent together with your application form, or you may arrange for your referees to send them directly to the Postgraduate Research and Scholarships Office. Your application may be significantly disadvantaged without these reports.”
