Connecting Personal Laptops

A Quick Guide to Connecting Personal Laptops to the Lab Network

Step 1 If you use wired connection plug your network cable into one of the ports along the corridor wall.  These ports are labelled "SNAP Ports". For wireless connection just make sure your wireless network is on (some laptops have a switch located somewhere along the front or side edge for turning wireless network on and off). The password for connecting SNAP wireless network is "12345" (for more information visit the SNAP webpage at http://www.ucs.uwa.edu.au/web/student/internet/services/snap).

Step 2 Logon to SNAP using your SNAP password.

Step 3 Logon to "UWA Civil Student VPN" using your civil computer lab username/password (see setup page for how to create a "UWA Civil Student VPN" on your Windows XP system).

Step 4 If you want to print to one of the networked printers in the lab go to Start>>Run>>Type \\tinglewood in the empty field>>Click on "OK" to run the command. If prompted for username and password , type ‘guest’ and leave password field empty and click on "OK". Then a window should open in which the three shared printers (i.e. Printer1, Printer2 and Printers) and a few folders are listed.  Double click on any of the shared printers to install them.

**NOTE** The networked printers may not work properly on Windows Vista because the driver installed on the printer server is not compatible with Vista.

Step 5 If you want to access the shared folders on the lab server (i.e. Public, Notes and StudentSoftware) go to Start>>Run>>Type \\driftwood in the empty field>>Click on "OK" to run the command. If prompted for username and password, type in your lab username and password to log onto the server. Then a window should open with the shared folders listed in it.  Double click on the shared folder you want to access to open it.
