I have worked at UWA since 1986, heading an active geomechanics research group, comprising about 40 researchers and technical support staff. The main areas of interest of the group are in the mining and offshore industries.
I have been awarded an ARC Federation Fellowship, which will run through until 2010.

The Australian Centre for Geomechanics is a not-for-profit mining centre which undertakes research, education and training activities in the geomechanics disciplines to provide industry with the necessary tools and knowledge to ensure that safety is not simply a top priority on par with productivity, but rather an ethic that guides everything.
The Deep Extraction of Earth Resources initiative aims to bridge gaps between related disciplines, to combine the testing and analytical capabilities of the research groups, to stimulate integration of theoretical and applied approaches targeting improved recovery of deep earth resources and to develop new educational programs in this area.
We collaborate our research activities with the Centre for Offshore Research and Engineering (CORE) at the National University of Singapore.
