Our Undergraduate Computer Laboratory has 48 Pentium 4 computers and three Hewlett-Packard laser printers, all networked through 100Mb switches.

Computers and printers are arranged in three bays that can be isolated from each other by foldable dividers. There is also a high-resolution data projector in the north bay.

Usage

The primary use of the laboratory is for the School’s teaching activities. Access to the computing facilities may be available to external users as approved by the School. Two levels of access as defined below can be granted to the eligible users.

Unlimited access

This level of access allows a user to log onto any computers in the laboratory at any time throughout the academic year (typically from late February to the end of November). However, the availability of computers is not guaranteed for users with unlimited access. Users in pre-booked classes have higher priority over others. Eligible users are:

• Academic and general staff of the School
• Postgraduate students of the School
• Undergraduate students enrolled in the units offered by the School
• Any other authorised users as approved by the School.

Restricted access

This level of access grants a user limited access to specified computers during scheduled time periods only. No access outside the scheduled time periods is allowed. Eligible users are:

• UWA staff members attending classes and training courses run in the laboratory by the School or any external parties
• UWA undergraduate and postgraduate students attending classes and training courses run in the laboratory by the School or any external parties
• External users attending commercial training courses in the laboratory
• Any other authorised users as approved by the School.

Priority of access

Priority access to computing facilities will be given in the following order:

1. Lecture, tutorial and laboratory sessions as required by the units offered by the School
2. Extra lecture, tutorial, laboratory and revision sessions as required by individual lecturers responsible for the units offered by the School
3. Special internal training courses run by the School
4. Non-profit training courses run by other schools/centers of UWA
5. Commercially profitable training courses run by external parties.

Charges

Commercial rates (excluding GST)

These rates apply to the use of the computing facilities by parties external to UWA or UWA users external to the School running commercial classes (that is, classes where participants pay a fee)

• Computers:$6 per hour per machine
  $80 per hour : 1 bay (16 PCs)
  $120 per hour : 2 bays (32 PCs)
  $160 per hour : 3 bays (48 PCs)
• Data projector:$10 per hour
• IT support: $75 per hour
• Internet: 10 cents per megabyte downloaded
• Printing: 10 cents per A4 page.

UWA user rates (internal T-form transfer)

These rates apply to the use of the computing facilities by UWA users external to the School

• Computers:$3 per hour per machine
  $40 per hour : 1 bay (16 PCs)
  $60 per hour : 2 bays (32 PCs)
  $80 per hour : 3 bays (48 PCs)
• Data projector:$5 per hour
• IT support: $50 per hour
• Internet: Use Cyllene or Tartarus accounts with full access and pay at UCS
• Printing: 5 cents per A4 page.

Special daily and weekly rates may be negotiated and in exceptional cases, these charges may be waived or reduced by special approval from the Head of School or the School Manager.
