Procedure for loading a new system image
You must back up all your files first. Loading a new system image will format and delete all the files on the C: drive. There is no way to recover any files from the C: drive once the loading process has started.
Back up your files
You must back up all the files that you have saved on the C: drive plus the following folders to a removable hard disk or a USB drive:
- C:\Documents and Settings\your_login_name\Application Data (program specific files)
- C:\Documents and Settings\your_login_name\Desktop (files and shortcuts on your desktop)
- C:\Documents and Settings\your_login_name\Favorites (your IE favorites)
- C:\Documents and Settings\your_login_name\Local Settings\Application Data (program data)
It is strongly recommended that you also back up your files on the D: drive even though D: drive should not be affected by the new system image.
You must back up all the files you want to keep to an external storage device before proceeding to the following steps.
Prepare a bootable CD for loading a new system image (skip this step if you already have a bootable CD)
- Log into one of the PCs in our Undergraduate Computer Lab in room A207.
- Load a blank CD-R in the CD drive (Imation or Vertim brand is recommended).
- Copy the iso” file from the “S:\Student Laptops\Bootable CD ISO Images\” folder on to your desktop:
- for 2007 laptops, copy the “Satellite Pro A120.iso” file
- for 2008 laptops, copy the “Satellite Pro A200.iso” file
- for 2009 laptops, copy the “Satellite Pro A300.iso” file
- Open “Nero StartSmart” (Start>>Programs>>Nero).
- Select the “Burn Image to Disc” option under the “Copy and Backup Menu”.
- Change the Files of Type to “Image files (*.nrg, *.iso, *.cue) and browse to your desktop to find the iso file. Click “Open” and then “Next” to start burning the ISO disc image on to the blank CD. It will take about one minute or so to burn the CD.
Load a new system image
- It is important that you first make sure your laptop is on the main AC power supply.
- Connect your laptop to a wired SNAP data port in our computer lab A207.
- Switch on your laptop and put the bootable CD you prepared in the CD drive of the laptop.
- Restart Windows.
- Press F12 key as soon as the screen displays the Toshiba logo to bring up the Boot Menu.
- Use “Down Arrow” key to select option CD/DVD.
- Press enter to boot the laptop off the CD.
- You laptop will boot into a Windows like basic operation system and start loading a new system image over the network automatically.
- It will take 10 to 30 minutes to load a new system image using a SNAP port in our computer lab. A progress bar will be displayed during the loading process.
Do not press any key or turn the laptop off during booting and while the image is loading.
- Your laptop will reboot automatically after the loading process is complete.
- Take the CD out and keep it in a safe place for future use.
- Log in as “Admin” without a password (leave the password field blank) after Windows has started
- Click “Yes” to restart if Windows prompts with the following message:
“Windows has finished installing new devices. The software that supports your device requires that you restart your computer before the new settings will take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?”

Post-imaging configuration procedure
It is very important that you follow the steps below to configure your laptop after loading a new system image on to the C: drive. Failing to do so will cause malfunction of some of the engineering programs and Windows not being able to access any shared printers or folders on the network.
Change the computer name
- Log in as “Admin” without a password (leaving the password field blank).
- Right-click on “My Computer” icon on the desktop.
- Select “Properties” on the drop-down menu to open the System Properties window.
- Click “Computer Name” on the menu bar at the top.
- Click “Change” button located at the lower right part of the window.
- Append your civil computer lab login name (which is your UWA assigned username, for example, “smithp01”) to the default in the “Computer Name” field (this will be “A300-“ for 2009 laptops, “A200-“ for 2008 laptops, and “A120” for 2007 laptops).
- Click “OK” button on this window.
- Click “OK” on the popup dialog box.
- Click “OK” on the main System Properties window.
- Click “Yes” on the popup dialog box to reboot Windows.
Set a password for the “Admin” account
- Log in as “Admin” and press Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the “Windows Security” dialog box.
- Click “Change Password” at the bottom left corner.
- Leave “Old Password” blank and type your new password in the “New Password” and “Confirm New Password” fields (It is recommended that the password is set to be the same as your civil computer lab password).
- Click “OK” to set the new password.
- Click “Log Off” to log out and back in using the new password to perform the following “Add a new user account” task.
Add a new user account for yourself
- Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel.
- Double-click the “User Accounts” icon.
- Click “Create a new account” under “Pick a Task”.
- Type your civil computer lab login name in the empty field under the “Type a name for the new account”.
- Click “Next” to get the “Pick an account type” windows. Make sure the circle next to “Limited” is ticked, and then click “Create Account”. This will take you back to the User Accounts windows.
- Click on the new account you just created to open the property window for the account.
- Click “Create password” to set the password to be the same as your civil computer lab password.
- Now log out and back in using the new login name and password you just created - it is strongly recommended you always use this account to log into your laptop. Because of the limited access of this account to Windows system files most viruses/spyware will not be able to infect your laptop. You only use the “Admin” account when loading any new software that requires administrative privileges.
Create “My Documents” folder on the D: drive
- Log in using your civil computer lab login name and password.
- Right-click on “My Computer” on the desktop and select “Explore” on the drop-down menu to open Windows Explorer.
- Double-click on “My Documents” just below “Desktop” in the left pane and Windows will create a folder called “My Documents” on the
D: drive. Your profile has been preconfigured to use this folder for saving your work files and data. You will get error messages if this
folder is not in place or it has a different name.
Set up sponsor’s logo image as wallpaper
- Right-click on an icon free spot on the desktop.
- Click “Properties” on the drop-down menu.
- Click “Desktop” on the top menu bar.
- Choose the right image from the list under “Background:”
- Select “aaa civil” if your laptop was sponsored by the UWA Civil Engineering Futures Foundation.
- Select “aaa bhp” if your laptop was sponsored by BHP Billiton Iron Ore.
- Make sure the “Center” option is selected under “Position:” to the right of the “Background:” option list.
- Click “Apply” and “OK”. The wallpaper selected should be displayed in the centre of the desktop.
Enrol your fingerprints for logging on
- Double-click on the “TrueSuite Access Manager” icon on the desktop and follow the wizard to enrol one or more fingerprints for logging
on to your laptop. The fingerprint scanning window is between the two buttons under the touch mouse pad. (You can skip this step if you do not want to use your fingerprint to log on).
Notes:
You must use your civil computer lab login name and password.
A number of engineering programs installed on your laptop need to access shared folders on the lab server for checking licences and they will only work if you log in to your laptop using your civil computer lab login name and password.
